Harlem Apartment Building

This entry in the Big Ideas for Small Lots NYC competition focused on senior-friendly housing, as affordable independent residences for seniors are needed in this neighborhood undergoing a demographic shift. A fully accessible building can also accommodate all other populations and attract younger and more able-bodied residents, creating a cross-generational community.  The design incorporates shared components despite the tight dimensions of the lot. Providing common use areas encourages neighbor recognition, within the building and along the block. It also helps to facilitate independent living for older residents by providing an on-site location for services particular to their needs.
